Biography and Clinical interests

A/Prof Dan Carroll trained at Oxford University and after working as an intern in paediatric surgery in Oxford went on to further training at Alder Hey Children's Hospital and St Bartholomew's Hospital London. After commencing his surgical training Dan worked at the Birmingham Children's Hospital as a paediatric surgical trainee and went on to complete a Doctor of Medicine degree at Oxford, researching neonatal necrotising enterocolitis, whilst working as a paediatric surgical registrar at Bristol Children’s Hospital.

Dan returned to Birmingham for six years as paediatric surgical trainee, with a year spent at the Royal Children's Hospital Melbourne as a fellow in paediatric surgery. He spent the final two years of his surgical training subspecialising in paediatric urology and was appointed as a consultant to Cambridge University Hospital in 2008.

Dan relocated to Townsville in 2012 where he has helped develop the department of paediatric surgery at Townsville University Hospital including the pioneering paediatric burns service.  Dan has written many academic papers and contributed to several textbooks (including essential surgery) and has been commissioned to write a textbook on tropical paediatric surgery.

Dan conducts private practice at Mater Private Hospital Townsville and has clinical interests in paediatric surgery, paediatric urology, minimally invasive surgery, continence and antenatally detected surgical anomalies.
