Intern training program

The Mater Private Hospital Townsville – Intern Training Program provides interns opportunities to apply, consolidate and expand their clinical knowledge and skills, to progressively increase their responsibility for providing safe, high-quality patient-centred care.

The 2024 program runs from 10 January 2024 until 19 January 2025, including a week and a half of orientation. The term dates are as follows:

Orientation week

Term 2 15 April until 23 June 2024 10 weeks
Term 3 24 June until 1 September 2024 10 weeks
Term 4 2 September until 10 November 2024 10 weeks
Term 5 11 November until 19 January 2025 10 weeks

 

Mater delivers its Intern Training Program in partnership with the Townsville Hospital Health Services (THHS), to offer interns a blended experience of private and public hospital systems. Mater and THHS  work together  to ensure program delivery is inclusive of: start of year orientation, allocations education delivery program activities governance, recruitment, delivering accredited placements, certifying completion and evaluations).

The partnership is formalised under the Clinical Placement Agreement for the Clinical Placement of Interns between Mater Private Hospital Townsville and THHS . Mater also has a rotational relationship with North West Hospital and Health Service (NWHHS), for the delivery of Emergency Department (ED) rotations. NWHHS offers the unique opportunity to experience a rural rotation.

15 placements have been accredited by Prevocational Medical Accreditation Queensland (PMAQ). Mater Private Hospital Townsville is accredited to oversee Intern recruitment and successful completion of the Intern Training Program.

More information about accredited intern rotations in Queensland is available through PMAQ or Queensland Health Website. 

Mater’s Medical Education Unit (MEU) team coordinates the program in its entirety, liaises with partner agencies, organises orientation, runs the Facility Education Program, supports interns employed or hosted by Mater, assists units to meet accreditation requirements, and improves all aspects of the program through evaluation and quality improvement projects.

2024 Intern Training Program - Expressions of Interest

Recruitment will commence in September 2023 and final year medical students are invited to submit an Expression of Interest for the 2024 Intern Training Program, in accordance with Private Hospital Stream.

  1. A cover letter explaining why you would like to live and work as an intern in Townsville.
  2. Have you applied to the JDTP Private Health Stream 2024?  
  3. What is your current Visa Status?
  4. A copy of your CV and academic transcript (an unofficial transcript is acceptable)
  5. Copy of your application to the 2024 JDTP - PHS
  6. IMG to provide copies of AMC 1 and 2 certificates
  7. Details of two professional referees from clinical placements in Australis, including work email address and phone number.
